Walter Kuhlman (1918-2009) moved to Sausalito in the 1950s where he built a house with his wife Tulip. He worked daily in his Industrial Center Building third floor studio from 1965 until shortly before his death. His work is represented in collections of major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Museum of American Art, Washington, the British Museum, London, and the Museum of Modern Art, Sao Paulo.
