Statue of King Manuel I

This white stone sculpture of King Manuel I was executed in 1933 by the sculptor Maximiano Alves, and it depicts King Manuel I of Portugal in a sitting position.

This enlightened monarch who reigned from 1495 to 1521 was responsible for giving to Portugal its most glorious age, as he was the most active supporter of the Great Discoveries that would eventually bring to his kingdom a global maritime empire, which would extend from Brazil to Timor.

Having established his court during the first years of his reign in the ancient Palace of the Alcáçova, King Manuel I is also strongly linked to the History of the Castle of St George, as we will now see.

For that, please turn right just after the statue, and walk towards the gothic arch on the ruined wall, about 20 meters away.
