The Museum

Right after the café, you will find the entrance to the Castle’s Museum.

Having been built from the few complete walls of the ancient Royal Palace of the Alcàçova that still stand, this beautiful space gathers pieces and artifacts which were recovered from the entire area of Castle of St George throughout the time.

Once you’re inside the Museum’s main hall, you will notice the very typical line of original ogival arches, supported by octagonal columns, which constitute some of the best preserved elements of the ancient Royal Palace.

We now invite you to explore the permanent exposition, which will help you to better understand the several historical periods that mark the occupation of the hill of the Castle of Lisbon.

The objects that incorporate the permanent collection of the Museum date from as far back as the 7th century BC, up to the 18th century.

We especially call your attention to the pieces dating from the Moorish settlement of al-Us̲h̲būna in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Feel free to explore this collection at your pace.

When you’re done, after having visited the Museum’s shop in the lower floor, please return to the Museum’s main entrance, next to the café.

Once you’re there, keep walking down the large paved way towards the white stone statue, to the right.
