Pastel pencil on paper
“About 12 years ago, as I live near Schoolcraft College, I registered for a basic art class (on a whim) to do something on an evening that my wife played in a women’s golf league. It was a basic introduction class: pencil sketches of inanimate objects (i.e. vases, various sized bottles, bowling pins, hats, etc.). I figured I would try a Portrait Painting class. I struggled at first, but that instructor was very good and patient. She got me to finally understand that skin tones are a challenging process of blending several, if not many, various colors, hues, tints, etc. – encouraging all students to push their limits. She finally, gradually, got me to try colored pastels. Something ‘clicked,’ and I have been taking Portrait Drawing classes (three semesters/year) for approximately 10-12 years. Her basic lesson is “paint what you see, not what you know.”
