D.D.S. (DDS; MS in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 1982)
“Trained in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency program under Dr. James Hayward and Dr. George Upton from 1979-1982 receiving my certificate and MS degree. I joined the faculty upon completion of my training in 1982. Over the following years I served as a Co-director of the Dentofacial Team, a Co-director of the Cleft Palate Team, program Director for the Oral and Maxillofacial Training Program, and became an Assistant Professor with appointments at the School of Dentistry and the Medical School. I resigned in 1993 and opened my own practice in Ann Arbor(OMSAA), working out of Saint Joseph Hospital. I retired from active practice at the end of December in 2014. Due to my training, I always felt I might be able to do some sculpting of the human face and perhaps relate it to dentofacial surgery.”
“The Beauty Within”
In the artist’s words, these sculptures depict “the before and after appearance of a patient who had undergone dentofacial orthognathic corrective surgeries to the upper and lower jaws and chin to address malocclusion, hyperplasia, and facial asymmetry.” These works are a perfect example of the intersection between the artistic foresight needed to envision a dental surgery end result and also using those same abilities to render this patient in an artistic media afterwards.
