Porta do Moniz, simply means Gate of Moniz is where the valorous Portuguese knight Martim Moniz, sacrificed his life during the battle for the conquest of Lisbon in 1147.
Historian says, to keep the Castle’s gate opened to the Christian soldiers led by King Afonso Henriques, Martim Moniz has put his body between the door and its rounded frame while the Moorish defenders tried to shut it fiercely. This sacrifice eventually allowed the knights to enter the Castle, and definitely conquer it for the Crown of Portugal.
Martim Moniz is since a character which is intricately part of the History of Lisbon, as well as a symbol of the city’s resilience and courage throughout the centuries.
