This impressive tree is the Ironwood, also called the American Hop-Horn Beam; scientifically known as Ostrya virginiana. Its wood is extremely hard and dense, hence its name. The lumber harvested from this tree is often used for sleigh runners. Ironwood trees don't usually grow very tall. During the fall, you might see wild turkeys, grouse, or other animals feeding on its large seeds. Take a look at the leaves. They are rather large, and have pointy tips and sharp, jagged edges. Lastly, notice the bark; thin and brown with a shredded texture.
