Observe the tree in front of you. This tree is called the Pin Oak, or the Quercus palustris. Notice the multitude of small, pin-like leaves that give the tree its name. In autumn, the leaves display a vibrant red color. Pin oaks are unique in that their lower branches persist after death. This allows them to provide thermal cover for songbirds in the winter months. These trees thrive in wet conditions, so much so that you'll hear some flooded areas called "pin oak flats". Pin Oaks are also valuable to wildlife because of the plentiful amounts of acorns they produce. The bark sets this oak apart from the rest; it is grayish brown, smooth and uncommonly thin for its genus.
