Rood2

The South Garth

As you go outside, look to your left and you will see where the cloisters and nunnery buildings used to stand.

One of the rarest treasures in the country is the 11th century Rood (cross) by the Abbess’ Doorway. Above Jesus you can see the ‘Hand of God’ coming down from Heaven ready to receive his son. To the right is a little cupboard which would have held an oil lamp or a candle. Can you see the three holes which allowed the smoke to escape?
