Saint Lawrence’s Chapel – the North Transept

In this chapel you will find an Italian-style painting behind the altar. It was made about five hundred years ago and has pictures of saints who were important to the nuns who lived here. The figure at the bottom left is probably the abbess who ordered the painting.

Now, turn left and look at the lower right window on the north wall.

This interesting window is in memory of the Reverend Edward Berthon, who was the Vicar of Romsey for 32 years in Victorian times. Can you see his face?  Edward Berthon was an inventor, astronomer and boat builder who was responsible for lots of much needed restoration in the Abbey. The window depicts the Holy family at work in Nazareth. Can you see the carpenter’s tools, knitting needles and wool above Jesus’ head? In the bottom left hand corner of this window can be seen a folding boat, which was made by Berthon’s boat-building company.

Leaving Saint Lawrence’s Chapel, turn right into the North Nave Aisle.
