Priest

Saint Ethelflaeda’s Chapel

To the right of the Altar in here is a painted board of an unknown kneeling priest which dates from the late 1400s.

The window shows the crucifixion of Jesus.

Behind you on a column is a statue of Saint Benedict, crafted from chicken wire by Belinda Rush-Jansen. Saint Benedict was the founder of the Benedictine order in whose name the nunnery was founded. The statue was fitted here in 2008.

Next to this is a list of the vicars of Romsey, which starts in 1334 with the first vicar, Nicholas de Botelstan and ends with our present vicar, Thomas. The vicar is the priest in charge of the Abbey and leads many of the services.

Continue into Saint Mary’s Chapel.
