The Threadgold Treasury

This display case contains items of special interest to Romsey Abbey. The most important of these is the Deed of Sale. For many years, part of the nuns’ abbey had been used as the parish church by the people of Romsey. When King Henry VIII closed the nunnery in 1539, it left Romsey with no parish church. This certificate was signed by the King in 1544 when he sold the Abbey to four ‘guardians’ on behalf of the people of Romsey for £100. So now the Abbey belongs to everyone in Romsey.
