Saint Mary’s Chapel

The altar, with three shields on the front, is actually the tomb of one of Romsey’s abbesses, but we don’t know which one.

The chapel window was made in 1879 and shows the ‘Adoration of the Shepherds’. In the centre are Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in a manger. To the sides are the shepherds who have come from their fields to visit the baby on the first Christmas night.

The wall painting, to the right, which dates from the early 13th century, is believed to show scenes from the life of Saint Nicholas.
