Candlestand

Saxon Foundations

Part of the second known church on this site can be seen through an opening in the floor to your left. These remains, which were discovered in 1900, are part of the curved end of the Saxon church. The blue markings on this map show the size of this church.

Near the Saxon foundations is the candlestand. If you’re with a grown-up, you might like to light a candle and make your requests to God for yourself or for someone you know.

Continue in the same direction and enter Saint Lawrence’s Chapel - the North Transept.
