Gay Germain - "Butterflies Are Free"

Hi, this is Gay Germain, painter, printmaker, and sculptor, born in Pennsylvania, lived in New York, Sarasota, Florida, and currently residing in Littleton, Colorado.

While practicing the art of printmaking, my interest developed toward a process of combining monotype with Chine-Colle and composing shapes, lines, and spatial division intuitively. My piece, “Butterflies are Free”, is an example of both a planned and spontaneous approach to this technique.

The idea of butterflies sprouting their wings and traveling freely through my Florida garden was the inspiration for this piece. I used oil-based etching ink with several hand-cut stencils and made repeated passes through the press to create layers of images that add both interest and complexity.

Thank you for checking out my work, and I hope you enjoy the show.
