To compose, produce, and perform my music, I primarily use an instrument called a modular synthesizer. It is a fully customizable instrument that I build myself to suit my tastes and styles.
When I work on music, the piece lives inside of electronic hardware. There is no sheet music or music book. Instead, the tones, notes and rhythmic information are stored inside pieces of gear called samplers and sequencers. While the data is the same, the storage medium looks completely different.
Again, these instruments are essential to my workflow and so for the visual component of my One Sheet piece, I built a replica of a modular synthesizer using old prototypes from a local synthesizer company, and then replaced the panel art with the staff paper provided for the exhibit.
As a musician, I am constantly inspired by the world around me. The musical piece I chose for this exhibit is titled “They Here”. I started working on this piece in the winter of 2021. We were expecting guests the night that I started making the song and when they got the house, my wife popped her head into my studio and said “they here”. I thought is was kind of funny, so I saved the work in progress with that title.
The piece its self is an ethereal soundtrack meant to give the listener a warm escape with a triumphant return to reality. I like to use analog drum machines and synthesizers in conjunction with my voice ran through lots of effects. I love the juxtaposition of technology and nature as well as using vintage and modern instruments and techniques together to create a unique sound.
Please enjoy my piece, They Here.
