Mark Harris - "Visual Work: Music Piece on Music Paper"

Instructions

In this structured improvisation, each player chooses a color and follows the path of that color until each player reaches a red triangle at the end of a path. Each player creates one theme or set of thematic material for the circles in their route, and a different theme or set of thematic material for the squares. The red triangle means don't play, or if at the end of a path, stop. The small circles with arrows is a 'your choice' place for the players, and the zigzag line means 'something very special. The rectangles with double lines are loops, and the players are to play around each of those 3+ times before moving on. The lines between the shapes are to be interpreted as accompaniment for the other players, using some part of the previous event.

We found we enjoyed performing this as an elapsed time piece, wherein we would decide (fairly arbitrarily) on a time length, and see if we could play through the piece and end as closely as possible to the time decided on. We liked 5 minutes and 37 seconds, and came pretty close with the recording.

Start at the top - pick a color - one of the big circles at the top, on cue, all play a sustained sound to start,, then move on to selected paths

Follow the path, don't go backward

Circles-thematic material #1

Squares - thematic material #2

Small Circle with arrows - your choice

Zigzag line - something very special

Red Triangles - don't play, or if at the end of a path, stop
