Janet Feder - "When You Dance in the Kitchen"

This score represents a sort of map for the piece When You Dance In The Kitchen, which was an improvised recording played on three guitars: a Fender Jazzmaster electric, a Reverend baritone electric, and a nylon string acoustic baritone made by Milan Sabljic. Each is listed on the score, to the left of their respective staves, as “Rev.” (this is the guitar that plays the melody); “Jazz” (the guitar that plays most of the extended technique “effects”), and “Milan”, the guitar that plays the ostinato or repeating pattern that flows throughout.

Creating a score for this piece was quite a challenge. My ideas went through a lot of changes, because I see music as shapes in my head however I’m not a visual artist, and so making music manifest on paper - artfully – is another universe altogether.

I couldn’t have made this project without collaborating with Joe Shepard, who recorded & mixed the guitar parts. Joe invited his brother Rick Shepard to build the frame, which allowed for the layering and containing of lights, score, and objects. Galen Teller has been exploring the world of wire art, and when I described a vision of 50 tiny stick figures in lots of different positions, Galen excellently obliged. You’ll see them floating among the split rings and other metal objects that fill the bottom of the frame. These are some of the “things” I use to alter specific strings of my guitars to create sounds not typically associated with the instrument.

This song is available under my name, along with much of the rest of my catalogue – and astounding music from artists around the World! – at Bandcamp.com.

Thanks for listening.
