Florentine Table, circa 1875
A. M. Todd traveled widely throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. This table was purchased by Todd in 1923 from the Estate of Sir Edward Naylor Leyland in London. The inlay of this table is identified as Florentine for a specific reason. Inlay work coming from Florence can be distinguished in a few ways from the rest of Italy, including the wider use as decoration for table tops, cabinets and more versus the Roman approach of use as architectural covering. Beyond placement, work coming out of Florence used natural subjects and semiprecious stones, with the goal of imitating a painting, making the cut and fitting of the semiprecious stones and other pieces so precise as to not be distinguishable where each piece meets.
