The Henderson Post Office exhibit includes a wall of post office boxes and a window counter that came from the U.S. Postal Service. It was used in Henderson at the time of the boom.
Take a close look at the PO Boxes. Notice anything about the dials? Instead of numbers, letters were used. This was so there were 13 possibilities on each dial instead of just 0-9.
Take a moment to read about Mrs. Annie D. Barker, the first female postmaster of Kilgore. Just inside the post office clerk window, to the left, a photo of Barker and her team of clerks, carriers, and rural carriers can be seen.
