Elisha Lewis

Judge Elisha Lewis departed this life at the age of 65 years in 1900. Elisha was born in Claylick Pennsylvania in 1834. At the age of 17 he left for Ohio where he clerked until 1853, when in a company of 10, he crossed the plains for California arriving in 1853. He engaged in placer mining and moved around the west to various mining camps. He married Charlotte E Colt of Niagara County, NY on Oct. 3, 1866. 

In 1876, the family moved to Silver City where Elisha engaged in the merchandise business and invested in several local mines. He served as the probate judge for many terms and held the position of superintendent of Sabbath schools of Silver City for 21 years. 

The couple had three children who married residents of Silver City and stayed in the area for some time.
