John J. Kellogg

John J Kellogg, from Jordan Valley, died in 1878 at the age of 51. He was born in Ohio and moved to California during the 1849 gold rush. He raised stock in the Jordan Valley area. His obituary said that he had the enviable reputation among his neighbors and those who knew him best of being an honorable, upright, industrious man. He left a wife and four children to mourn their loss.

His wife Martha was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah Brooks. Sarah is buried to the left of John’s grave.

John was a valued member of the Odd Fellows. Most of the men buried here belonged to at least one fraternal organization. The Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias, Masonic groups, Knights Templar, Champion Red Cross, Temple of Honor, and Sons of Temperance were all active in Silver City. Before life insurance existed, membership in a fraternal organization provided support when members died. This included help with funeral arrangements and financial assistance for a miner's family.
