William Lawry

William Lawry died on July 22, 1894 at the age of 27 and is laid to rest here. Like so many miners in this area, William came from a mining family in Cornwall England. He was a native of Sticker, England which is located three miles from St. Austell in Cornwall.

In 1785, Sticker was described as "a new place" where workers in the Great Hewas Mine lived. The Great Hewas employed over 250 people by the 19th century and produced tin, copper, lead, and some silver. The last of these mines ceased production in 1926. Only the chimney of the engine house still marks its location.
