Hi! This is Andi Burnum. Thanks for taking a peek at my 13th sketchbook. I’m primarily a mixed media artist and there was a time where I felt like my drawing skills were getting pretty poor so I thought- I’m just going to have to draw every day and get better. So I did. I didn’t know what to draw so I just started drawing what happened during my days. It’s became a great capture of my life and I love it.
Fast forward and I’m STILL doing this- but I like it much more now. I’ll tell you- my first sketch books were pretty awful and I literally drug myself though them. Now that I’m more confident in my drawing skills… I LOVE sketchbook and I literally take it everywhere with me- from getting my oil changed and concerts just in case there is a spare moment. I actually won’t buy a purse unless I know my sketchbook fits inside of it!
My family farms in NW KS and one of my favorite things is to go home and help with anything ag related- especially the cows- they’re my favorite. The picture on the left is from a photo I snapped during one of our long days this past calving season. Debbie, the cow on the right, is a favorite in our herd. She had calved a few hours earlier, and we had this big storm starting to sweep through, so here we are, late afternoon, moving the pair to shelter before the winds got too terrible. This is a late afternoon shot of my dad and these great shadows in his element doing what he loves.
Since the beginning I’ve used these moleskin Sketch Albums. I love the square format. I also love using micron pens because they don’t bleed when you stick watercolor on top. I used to actually color all of these pages in too- but lately my schedule has just been much too busy for that extra step. I really enjoy using an 01 micron, and if I get really nerdy I’ll pull out the 005. Clearly like some detail work.
