My name is Sue Crosby Doyle. This artwork was created as “my large Sketch Book” i.e., the “Scroll”. I was given a large roll of fine art paper. I was working with another artist in his studio. He had established a warmup exercise for me to start my sessions with him. It was to do a series of squares and X’s and O’s to warm up the hand eye coordination before I started painting. I had brought the roll to the studio with me. There was a table about 4’ wide and I put the first part of the roll over the table. I used a black ink wash to start with. I continued to paint on the scroll every time I was in his studio. Sometimes the marks were very fluid and sometime tight. As time went by the scroll stretched on and on. I also had picked up collage pieces from the floor and attached them to the scroll. Just like a sketch book, words or phrases were added to the whole work. Finally, it was finished. The completed piece was shown at Core New Art Space when they were still on Santa Fe Drive in Denver.
Thank you for your time and enjoy.
