Hello. I'm Gregory Santos, artist, and printmaker. Originally from New York City, I relocated to Denver in 2015. Thank you for having an interest in my artwork. This drawing, titled Kimberly (light green), is one from a series of five created in 2010. The marks were made using water-soluble crayon over an oil based screen-printed flat for the background. To create the marks I submerge my hand while holding the crayon into a jar of water, activating its properties, and then work quickly and expressively allowing the marks to be wild, uncontrollable and free. Throughout the creative process I’m continually redacting marks with a razor blade and a paper towel and then laying down more layers of crayon, building up the textures while also revealing subtleties. The source image is my wife, Kimberly. Each of the five portraits use the same photograph of her as the initial reference point. After a foundation has been achieved I set the reference photo aside and allow my mood and thoughts to take control of developing the composition to the end. All five drawings in the series are Kimberly while none are a true representation of her. I invite you to learn more about myself and see more of my artwork at gregorysantos.com.
