Jane Addams Hull House (800 S Halsted St)

Did you know that UIC is also historically famous? 

Founded in 1889 by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, the Jane Addams Hull House was the first Settlement House in Chicago and the birthplace of social work. 

Hull House quickly grew to a complex of 13 buildings, including a theater, art gallery, clubs, dining hall, nursery school, residence for working women, the only library in the neighborhood, as well as one of the first free gyms in the country.

The Museum is comprised of 2 of the settlement complex's original 13 buildings. These spaces were used variously over the years, including as a nursery school, a library, and a salon for social and political dialogue. Currently, the Hull House serves as a museum and national landmark available for touring.

The Hull House is adjacent to UIC's Student Center East and across the street from the Student Recreation Facility. Make sure to take some time to soak in its beauty before you leave campus!
