Beyond the bird feeders, is a stream called Hylton Creek, which flows into Lake Fayetteville, and is part of the Illinois River watershed. If you follow the path close to the stream, you will be on our streamside trail. Look for a sign along the stream that discusses the riparian zone. This trail explores the riparian zone, which is the important strip of land at the edge of waterways.
Both Hylton Creek and Lake Fayetteville are home to a wide variety of native species. Sometimes you may hear a splash while walking along the streamside trail. This is usually an aquatic turtle, retreating back into the water after resting or laying eggs on the shore. Also, look towards the sky for a huge shore bird called the great blue heron. This large birds nest nearby and feed on fish at the lake.
On this trail, you can access all the gardens on the south side of the lawn. Alternatively, you can make your way back to the paved sidewalk that circles the great lawn.
