Injection

Audio transcription:

“My name is David Middlebrook and I’m a sculptor. I’ve spent the last 30 or 40 years trying to make thought visible. What I do is use materials of a variety of nature; I use shapes and forms; I use some recognizable images, some abstract images; I work on all scales. I try to make the size of the scale of the piece appropriate for the idea. I try to create a situation where there’s a connection between the work and the viewer. I like my work to be very approachable, I like it to be inviting, I like it to be an interaction in the communication with people who experience it. I’d say the years I spent as the Head of Sculpture at San Jose State University and as Associate Director of Fine Arts taught me how important it is that a visual education is at the core of human understanding, and it bridges all gaps between cultures, countries, languages, and certainly political positions. I really am a strong believer that a picture tells a thousand words. So I’ve continually used objects, surfaces, textures, forms, shapes, colors as a language, and that’s what I try to reach out to my species to share my thoughts and to hopefully learn from them and their responses.”
