One Step at a Time

Audio transcription:

“My name is Candyce Garrett and I live in Taos, New Mexico. I’m a granite sculptor and have been a sculptor since 1980. I’ve graduated to carving in granite, and started that in 1998. What I do is such a heavy material, and I do the larger scale, so I’m forced to use heavy, heavy equipment: overhead cranes, large forklifts, and large cranes. It’s like putting together a puzzle, and it’s very exciting for me. I wanted to do something different and I wanted to carry out a theme that I could work on and improve. So, quite by accident and I don’t even know what I was thinking, I decided to make granite look like it was piercing granite, but I wanted to use two colors. I had some black granite and I thought, ‘How can I utilize that?’ and then I thought, ‘I know; I’ll pierce the pink granite with the black.’ So I thought, ‘OK, now how am I going to do this?’ It was truly a process of just hit-and-miss for me.
