The Salon

This room would have acted as a place where the ladies could relax at the end of the day, have tea, and socialize with one another. Conveniently, it is at the opposite end of the house from the Billiard Room where the men would retreat. The ceiling is about half original and the remainder has been restored. The floor, on the other hand, is a completely original parquet floor (and is the only parquet floor in the house -- perhaps to add to the feminine tones in the room). This room would also double as a music room.

The surround of the fireplace is all plaster and is also in the process of being restored. The gold paint is not original and these areas will be restored back as funds become available.

The beautiful, rosewood six-foot Steinway piano in this room is original to Ventfort Hall. The piano had left Ventfort Hall when the Morgan children took over the mansion after their parents' passing and almost all of the original furnishings were auctioned off and thus lost to us. Since 1895 it has traveled from the Steinway factory in Astoria New York to Lenox, Massachusetts, to New York City, and then in 2011 to Portland Oregon, and finally back to Lenox in July 2021, coming full circle.

Although Steinway keeps confidential information about their customers, Ventfort Hall was able to confirm, using the serial number etched into the piano, that the instrument was completed on March 28, 1895, and shipped to a customer at 104 Walker Street in Lenox, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1895.

This room currently doubles as our museum gift shop. Be sure to stop back at the end of your tour to browse! For now, head up the stairs to the second floor. Take a right, and head down the hall into George Morgan's bedroom, which looks like a dining room.
