August Nilsson died in Silver City at the age of 25 years in 1896 of gastric fever. His illness was of short duration and the announcement of his death was a sad shock to those who could scarcely realize that one so young and full of life should have been called thus early to lay down life’s labors. August was born in Sweden in 1870 and came to Silver in 1889 at the age of 19. Since that time he has been almost continuously employed at the Idaho Hotel, where his naturally genial and accommodating disposition was instrumental in making an extended acquaintance and a great many fast friends. His death was due to an attack of gastric fever, aggravated by a severe cold and he was confined to his room for two weeks, during which time he received every attention physicians and loving friends could prescribe.
The funeral took place at the lower Masonic Hall. The Silver City band, of which August was a valued member, rendered a sacred selection at the hall and band members served as pall bearers.
The deceased left a father, mother, two sisters and four brothers, all in Sweden, to mourn his untimely death. Two of his brothers, Peter and Carl, formerly resided here but have returned to their old home. He had no known relatives in this country, but quite a number of his boyhood associates were with him in his last illness. May his sleep be peaceful.
