Derrick Piens' work considers the continuous process of transformation that all objects and materials undergo over time. Working primarily with plaster and wood, these brightly colored geomorphic objects visually transform as the viewer walks the space around them. The viewer must therefore rely on their personal memory of the form to fully understand it.
Piens works intuitively, actively discovering the works throughout the construction process, comparable to how the viewer perceives the work through examination and contemplation. These sculptures refer to the human body but also to geology and natural phenomena. Often large in size, his sculptures are built with particular attention to form, size and the relationship with the viewer, thus developing a visual and conceptual relationship between the viewer and the works he encounters.
Derrick Piens was born in 1978 in Chatham, Ontario and received his MFA from Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX) in 2007 and his BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University in 2005. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and the United States and his sculptures are held in numerous private collections in the UK, New York, Montreal and Toronto.
