Ground Level
Jean-Robert Drouillard claims a filiation with a certain sculptural tradition. Sculpting, by direct cutting, large figures in solid wood is for him a gesture of memory. The characters thus created impose themselves within the settings that are part of the narrative poetry. Jean-Robert Drouillard tells silent stories impregnated with the universe of the tale and the fable. Self-representation, which he compares to autofiction in literature, is at the heart of his approach. Hence the fact that he uses members of his family, as well as himself, as models.
Born in 1970 in Chatham, Jean-Robert Drouillard is a Quebec sculptor and singer-songwriter who grew up in Gaspé. After studying literature and creative writing at Laval University, he turned to sculpture. He graduated from the École-atelier de sculpture de Québec (now called Maison des Métiers d'art) in 2000. In 2002, he founded, with four other artists, the Coop Le Bloc5, an artistic production workshop located in Limoilou. He lives and works in Quebec City.
