Sorg Opera Revitalization Group

In August of 2012, the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group purchased the Opera House for $32,000. Since then, volunteers have donated countless hours, starting with cleaning out trash that was knee deep in some areas of the Commercial Building. At the start of their efforts, there were not even working bathrooms in the building.

The SORG group acquired donations and grants that went towards repairing the roof, restoring and upgrading electrical service, totally replacing heating and air conditioning, repairing plumbing and renovating bathrooms, replacing exit doors, and generally getting the building up to code so it could be reopened for performances. Other upgrades have included removing the drop ceiling that hid the upper balcony, installing new sound and lighting equipment, painting and remodeling the theater and lobby and concession area, replacing the audience seating, replacing the theater curtains and carpeting, and refinishing the stage floor.

The beautiful marquee out front was recently rebuilt and illuminated again, proudly announcing the current attractions happening in the theater.  Part of this repair process uncovered the stunning and original stone sign that similarly proclaimed to passersby that this beautiful building was “Sorg’s Opera House.”  While the stones have withstood 130 years of weathering and have seen better days, they are forever preserved in our lobby now along with some other artifacts that have been preserved through the revitalization efforts.  Be sure to check them out as you go through the lobby.
