There have been previous restoration efforts at the Sorg Opera House. In the 1980’s, the Friends of the Sorg formed as a community group to maintain the theater and present performances. In 1981, they held a 90th anniversary celebration featuring Andrea McArdle, who originated the role of Little Orphan Annie on Broadway. Among other efforts, the Friends of the Sorg mounted the projection screen on a moveable frame, allowing it to be raised so the stage could again be seen by the audience. In 1982, Middletown Lyric Theater’s production of Godspell was the first live production on the Sorg’s stage in almost 40 years.
