The West Wall has some interesting facts about it. Looking westward, imagine 2 wharves extending out into the water. Two wharves were built to allow for the delivery of construction materials. They were able to accommodate ships and barges. The first wharf was completed in 1848, and the second in 1862 by the Union forces. A small gage railroad was installed on the western pier in 1864, allowing for the transport of materials directly through a cut-out in the west wall of the fort.
In December 1865, the US Army while stationed at Fort Clinch, carried out the military execution of 5 soldiers of the 3rd Colored Infantry Regiment found guilty of mutiny. The five prisoners were sent to Fort Clinch for their sentence to be carried out. Outside the fort's west wall, the five were executed by firing squad. Over the course of the war, 3 soldiers from the 97th Pennsylvania were also executed for desertion while garrisoned at Fort Clinch.
