Welcome to the Tiny Room for Elephants Festival Audio Tour, presented by Love and Grit, a podcast from Visit Philadelphia that explores the authentic and diverse stories of the city.
The work you are viewing is by artist LOTITS.
This work is inspired by a sacred aquatic migrating bird that is sometimes misinterpreted as a swan, a flamingo or a duck from the East. In Hindu folklore, there’s a process of separating milk from a water mixture, which represents pulling good from evil. The milk refers to the white liquid in the stem of a lotus flower. It brings everything in full circle with the piece I’m doing and highlights different cultures.
When asked, what does the phrase “made with love, inspired by grit” mean to your creative process, the artist responded: “Philly is a tough town and we tend to transmute dark energy into beautiful things because we have no choice. I feel like everyone here is inspired by the city whether it’s the good or the bad. I think right now, more than ever, the city needs love through art.”
