Helen's Painted China

Herbert and Grace's oldest daughter, Helen, wrote many letters to her fiance William Hale in 1916 during their engagement. In those letters, Helen describes the social events, household chores, and hobbies that filled her days at home. One of her hobbies was hand painting china pieces, such as the dresser set you see on the table in Alden's room. Three of these pieces are signed by Helen and dated 1913, when Helen was around 19 years old. If you look closely at the side of the round, covered dish, a hair receiver, you can see her name in gold tucked within the scrollwork.
