Ship Carpenters’ Houses (Locust Street)

The row of houses on the left, all of them ship carpenters’ houses from the early 19th century, have been restored much to their appearance in 1900. Virtually every house on this street was built prior to 1850. When shipbuilding declined and oystering revived the town, these houses sheltered the oyster shuckers and seafood packing workers. The scale of these houses has been preserved, though they have been set back slightly from the edge of the street.
