Hello, my name is Tobias Fike.
For my piece in One Sheet I was able to realize an idea I’ve been wanting to do for several years now. My approach to this show was to use only the wood given to me for the sculptural portion. I used most of my 8x4 sheet, with a few scraps left. The arrangement of holes on the wood panel are a representation of a section of night sky from the northern hemisphere. You might recognize a constellation or two.
For the projection portion of this piece, I used some old home videos of myself as a child. I also included shadows of tree leaves and branches blowing in the wind, along with one of the earliest sketches of the surface of the moon. There is also footage I shot looking out from the front of a farm house in Kansas that was in my family for over 100 years. Finally, there is some video I created by shooting the side of a cardboard box with a light inside of it to create a kind of faux night sky, similar to the effect created in this piece by the video projection penetrating the holes in the wood.
Thank you for listening.
