Using 3D modeling software and a CNC router, a digital human body was carefully sliced into layers, given an internal spine support structure, and flat-packed onto a 4x8 sheet of plywood to be cut. Each piece was digitally tagged and etched by the CNC router for precise assembly. Through this complex series of sculpting, fabrication, and assembly, Layerman comes to live in this modern world only to live out his days somewhere in the gray area between complexity and monotony. Layerman was first created by Brad Bolte and Kyle Vendle of Clayshop in 2013 with the intent to have 49 friends exactly like him and be part of a large-scale public art installation called the Layerman takeover. This full-scale project has yet to materialize, and so layerman patiently waits for the rest of his crew to begin the takeover.
