Vapor Wave can be described as an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture from the 1980's and 90's. It rearranges our relationship with electronic media and parodies music and visual arts of that time period. It was mostly fueled by the social network user communities which generated its value. As quickly as Vapor Wave became popular around 2010 it began to split into other micro genres and became mainstream and popularized. In its popularity, the creators became disenchanted. It lost its true intent and initial appeal. Left abandoned, this somewhat brief anomaly in art and music was applied to algotherims on music platforms for users to unearth and enjoy. I believe it continues to hold value by offering mockeries of dystopian alternate realities based on consumerism, psychedelica, and absurdity which are some of my favorite themes in art.
