My name is Anne Bossert and I’ve been making colorful striped furniture out of high end plywood for over 20 years. I get the vivid colors with textile dyes. And the stripes are from cutting various angles into the plywood to expose the laminations in different ways.
My furniture has always been sculptural to varying degrees. This year, I decided I wanted to go even more sculptural. I wasn’t sure what I meant by those thoughts. But I took the opportunity of the One Sheet show to push my furniture even more into the sculptural realm.
I made three small tables with my sheet of plywood. I had to map out the parts ahead of time to make sure I could get it all out of one sheet. I wasn’t sure what size and shape the green angled pieces on the Mantis Table would be, because I had to gather up what few pieces were left over from cutting out all the bigger pieces to create them.
In my opinion, the Orchid Table wins the “most elegant” prize of the three. Pink, orange, and yellow is my favorite color combination at the moment. The Mantis Table thinks about being elegant but takes a turn for the funky. And the Cirque Table is the most exploratory, material wise. The cast epoxy ball feet are a loose reference to classic claw and ball feet. The yellow
cast epoxy ball on top bounces around on a spring taken from a spiral notebook.
These tables are meant to be used to display plants, sculptures, or general knick knackery. The horizontal surfaces are coated in epoxy so spilled liquids won’t cause damage. These would also make good side tables next to your favorite chair if you want to keep a collection of your treasures within your reach.
