In Eastern Europe, communist regimes fall one by one without bloodshed. In Berlin, people celebrate freedom on the wall that divided a country and a continent in two. Only Romania seems trapped in a parallel reality: on 24 November 1989, at the 14th Congress of the Communist Party of Romania, Nicolae Ceaușescu is re-elected secretary-general of the party. He had been in power since 1965.
