1. AN ISLAND OF TIME BETWEEN THE TWO WORLD WARS. Monique (1923-1943)

Monica Lovinescu had a happy childhood and teenage years in Bucharest, then the capital of a recently unified country in the process of economic, social and cultural modernisation. But the deterioration of the political climate and the death of her father in 1943 pushed her out of "childhood heaven", as she called it, and her dreamy adolescence.
