William Stevens

William Stevens, an old and respected resident of the county, died at the home of his daughter Nellie Ballard, at age 69 on December 7, 1898. He had been ill for over a year with bronchitis. According to his obituary, during his long illness he exhibited the same buoyant spirit and calm fortitude which characterized him his whole life, and he died as he had lived - a kind husband and father, a true friend and neighbor, and an honest and upright man.

William was born in Ohio and left for California with an ox team in 1850. He mined throughout Nevada until leaving for the Owyhee Mountains in June 1864. He volunteered to fight the following month in the South Pass battle against an Indian tribe where several people were killed. He worked in the OroFino and Poorman mines and ran a popular saloon, The Pilgram's Rest. In 1868 was elected sheriff of the county and later elected county commissioner. In 1868 he married Miss Harriet A Fell and they had one child, Mrs. Ballard, of Silver City. In 1872 he was badly injured by being thrown from the stage on a trip to Boise. He sued the stage company for $10,000 and received a $500 settlement. He moved to Flint in 1875 to raise cattle.

Two infant grandchildren of his are buried in this cemetery.
