St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

The current gothic-style church building with Tiffany stained-glass windows was completed in 1848 to replace the original church built in 1832, which was destroyed by fire in 1846. As such, it is often referred to as the “Mother of Episcopal Churches in Allegany County” for being the oldest. Later, in 1884, extensive repairs were made where the roof was rebuilt, a suitable chancel and choir were made, and the ceiling was changed. The altar was a gift from Rev. A.J. Warner, who resigned in 1884. More recently, the rare Trapper pipe organ, which was purchased in 1887, has been restored and concerts are given periodically.  This year the congregation is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the consecration of the new building.
