Ion Vianu, a psychiatrist, and Matei Călinescu, a poet and writer, met in a Romania paralysed by the terror of the Stalinist regime established in 1947. Their friendship blossomed despite the fear and mistrust sown among the people by a regime that sought above all to control minds.
