The pivotal event in the friendship between Nicolae Steinhardt and Alexandru Paleologu took place on 15 March 1960. Convinced that he would not survive twelve years in the prison system, Nicolae Steinhardt wished to convert to the Orthodox religion and be baptised before his death.
